Safely arrived and soggy in Cape Town

Just a short note to let all know that I arrived on Wednesday night, have been seeing sights these two days, and report to CCS tomorrow to begin my program. It is rainy season here--cold, hard rain, but the city is beautiful and the people extremely friendly. I've already eaten some new foods--samp, kudu, and malva pudding (find a recipe and make this dessert--it is fabulous!)--and hope not to weigh a ton when I return. I'll write a real post for you early next week.

Hi! My name is Jack and I'm really interested in following your blog along to see how your volunteer trip goes through CCS in South Africa. I am with a student org on my campus called Alternative Breaks@UCSD. I went to Russia through CCS this past spring break, and my program is offering South Africa, but we'd like to know the effectiveness of CCS at this particular site, since it's on the expensive end of the spectrum. So, I would love to follow your trip along and read what you have to say about your experiences, and hopefully I will be there next summer!

Hi Jack, Several of us have been talking this week about how well this program is run. In addition to feeling "useful," we have already had tremendous opportunities to interact with local people and to participate in culturally enriching activities through CCS. Of the 20 participants in homebase 2 (this program grew this summer, so a second homebase had to be opened up for the summer only), I think about 15 all started together last Saturday. Already, four have decided to extend their time here, and several others are thinking about it. Several of us don't have that option, since we have jobs waiting for us at home, but I believe we would consider doing so as well. So, I hope I give you information to use in making your decision, but my recommendation after the first week is, choose CCS South Africa!
